The Family School provides preschool through grade five students with an outstanding educational experience. The low student/teacher ratio allows individual attention for each child and fosters close, caring relationships between and among teachers and students. Learning experiences are developmentally appropriate and meaningful. Children are given the opportunity and assistance to develop as whole, balanced people—emotional, social, physical, and artistic as well as intellectual. The core curriculum features strong, integrated programs in the foundation skills of reading, writing, mathematics, and social studies, and regular instruction by specialists in Spanish, art, physical education and sportsmanship, science, and music and drama. Our rural campus, tucked between a national forest and an organic farm, supports our strong hands-on environmental and ecological focus. Emphasis is placed on individual and cooperative problem solving, using analytical, critical, creative, and practical approaches to the tasks at hand. Each teacher has refined her program to suit the range of abilities appropriate to the class, and the work of each year is responsive to the particular students and class makeup of the group.
