The Family School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, or ethnic origin in its admissions, the administration of its educational policies, or in other school sponsored programs. A generous Tuition Assistance program supports our commitment to making a Family School education available to a broad range of families.

Admissions decisions are made by the Head of School with input from appropriate faculty members. Admission is viewed as a "matching process;" a way to compare the needs and expectations of the prospective student and family with The Family School program and the children currently enrolled. Decisions on admission are based on the child's developmental and personal readiness for a particular class, as determined by any or all of the following:
  • The recommendation of his/her current teacher (when appropriate)
  • An interview and assessment by the teacher during the child’s school visit
  • Staff/faculty observations made during the child’s visit
  • Personal interviews with the prospective family by the Head of School

The Application Process

An Information and Application Packet will be sent to all interested families. Parents are encouraged to attend an informational Open House which includes a tour of the campus and an opportunity to learn more about the school and to ask any questions. If this is not possible, a school visit may be arranged on an alternate date.

Application to the Preschool (Green Door) Program

Children who are three by September 1 and are socially ready for a preschool experience, and who are toilet trained, may be invited to join Green Door. (Children in second-year Green Door must be four years old by September 1). Families must complete an application for admission and submit a non-refundable $50.00 application fee. A one-hour visit (with a parent or guardian) to Green Door is required of all prospective students. This includes an observation of the child in the class and a personal interview with the Head of School and the Green Door teachers.

Three-year olds begin their school experience with a three day per week schedule on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. All four-year-old students come on Tuesday and Thursday and one or two of the other days.

Decisions on all applications for the Green Door classes for which are complete by March 4 will be made and mailed by March 11. Returned enrollment acceptances are expected by March 25. Any further Green Door acceptances will be made from completed applications by April 29.

Qualified applicants who cannot be accommodated are placed on a waiting list pending the next appropriate opening.

Application to K-5

Families need not submit an application for continuing students, but should notify the office of their intent to remain at the Family School by March 4. Families must submit an application for new students together with a non-refundable $50.00 application fee. A student visit is then arranged for part or all of a morning for the Yellow Door kindergarten, and an entire morning or full day for older children. Usually the child will attend class with the children he or she would be joining, and the teacher of that class will make an observation and assessment as to the academic, social, and developmental match between the applicant and the prospective class. If the application is for the following year, the future teacher will also have an opportunity to meet and observe the child.

At the time of this visit parents will have an interview with the Head of School to answer any questions and to ensure a good fit between family expectations and school philosophy.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis as they are completed.

Qualified applicants who cannot be accommodated are placed on a waiting list pending the next appropriate opening.
